Ford has announced the wide-spread rollout of a new safety suite called Co-Pilot360. The Dearborn-based automaker says all of its new vehicle moving forward will be equipped as standard with the Co-Pilot360 technology.
Billed as the “most advanced standard driver assist package” offered by any mainstream auto brand, the Co-Pilot360 package includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring with cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, auto high-beams and a reverse camera. Ford also promises that it will update the Co-Pilot360 system in 2019 to include an emergency braking system that functions when a vehicle is in reverse.
“Though our vehicles today are safer than ever, drivers tell us they are still stressed about getting in a potential accident,” said Jim Farley, Ford president, Global Markets. “That’s one reason why we’re making these must-have technologies accessible to millions of customers each year.”
The Co-Pilot360 technology will debut with the introduction of the 2019 Ford Edge and Edge ST this fall. Ford says the system will be rolled out across its car, SUV and F-150 lineup following the launch of the new Edge. By 2020, the technology will be standard on 91 percent of Ford’s North American lineup.
In addition to its normal passenger cars, Ford is also making its automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and driver alert systems available to commercial customers. From 2020 on buyers of commercial grade E-Series, F-650, F-750 and F59 chassis will have access to the safety suite.
“Our commercial customers trust our trucks to get the job done,” Farley said. “And soon, we’ll be giving them another reason to trust us even more.”
Although not standard, Ford says its new vehicles will also offer what it calls “premium driver-assist technologies” like adaptive cruise control with stop and go and lane centering, evasive steering assist and post-collision braking.
