The Class 2B-3 range is occupied by the Ford F-250, F-350 and rivals.
Tesla has submitted a letter to the California Air Resources Board requesting that the Cybertruck be classified as a "medium-duty" vehicle.
The company is seeking Class 2B and Class 3 qualification, which would officially put the all-electric pickup in the same categories occupied by the Ford F-250 and F-350, with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 8,501-10,000 pounds or 10,001-14,000 pounds.
"While we have not yet begun production of the Cybertruck, we expect it to have a towing capacity of 7,500-14,000+ lbs., and it should very likely qualify as a 'Class 2B-3' medium-duty vehicle," Tesla noted in its letter to CARB.
The company has also asked the emissions agency to reconsider a proposed exemption of such trucks from its Advanced Clean Truck rule, which aims to encourage faster rollout of zero-emissions models in the medium- and heavy-duty classes.
"After light-duty vehicles, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles are the next largest contributor to transportation sector greenhouse gas emissions," CARB wrote in a recent statement. "It is our intention to build on the light-duty ZEV memorandum of understanding as a successful model to advance adoption of zero emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles."
The single-motor RWD Cybertruck promises to offer a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds or more, while the dual-motor AWD edition bumps the number to 10,000+ pounds. The range-topping tri-motor AWD edition is expected to be capable of towing more than 14,000 pounds, competing directly against the F-250 which can pull up to 15,000 pounds.
