Thai students use technology to create road safety enhancements
Ten teams from universities across Thailand meet Roojai.com and industry professionals from G-Able and ION Go developer to develop road safety solutions
Bangkok – 27 January 2020: Roojai.com, Thailand’s leading online car insurance platform, announced the winners of Roojai.com’s Road to The Future competition. The road safety campaign enlisted the help of students from universities across Thailand to come up with technology-focused solutions to reduce car accidents in Thailand.
Roojai.com’s Road to The Future competition is a part of the company’s commitment to increase awareness and promote road safety. This competition aims to encourage Thai students to submit their ideas on how technology can help to encourage people to drive more safely, reduce road traffic incidents, and improve Thailand’s status from being one of the world’s most dangerous driving environments.
The winners of the road safety campaign
Nicolas Faquet, Roojai.com’s Chief Executive Officer and Founder, presented the first prize of THB 100,000 to team Camlife from the Prince of Songkla University. As many Thai drivers sit behind the wheel for long periods without a break, the Camlife team wanted to tackle the problem of sleepy drivers. A camera in the car, which watches the driver, is connected to the Camlife app. Sensors pick up signs that the driver is falling asleep using the number of times the driver blinks, and this alerts the Camlife app. The app then sets off an alarm to alert the driver that they need to take a break.
Other winners included a team from Mahidol University, who also used an app to help drivers report lousy behaviour of other drivers, by using gamification. Drivers submit a report to collect points exchangeable for prizes and vouchers. Bangkok University’s Voodoo Cam uses a dashcam to detect traffic signs and help drivers anticipate what’s ahead on the road, helping them plan how to drive more safely and avoid any dangers.
From a total of forty-two teams that entered, ten were chosen to attend the final and join the workshop at Roojai.com’s head office where they developed their ideas with public and private sector industry professionals from the Department of Highway, G-Able; ION Go developer and Toyota Tsusho Nexty Electronics.
At the last round of the competition, each group of students presented their idea before being assessed by the experts on several criteria, including the creativity, practicality and effectiveness of their ideas and solutions, as well as their quality of presentation and teamwork.
