Tesla hits 5,000-unit weekly production for Model 3

CEO Elon Musk has framed the achievement as Tesla’s graduation to becoming “a real car company.”

After months of “production hell,” Tesla has finally reached its important Model 3 production target of 5,000 units per week.

The mass-market sedan is engineered for highly automated production, dismissing traditional processes in favor of new manufacturing technologies. The ambitious production promises left very little room for unexpected problems, however, forcing the company to pull out all the stops.

The automaker recently built a new supplementary assembly line in a ‘tent’ attached to the Fremont building, bypassing the need to wait for crews to build a permanent structure.

CEO Elon Musk celebrated the milestone in an email to employees, praising the “mind-blowing” dedication and creativity required to resolve problems.

“We either found a way or, by will and inventiveness, created entirely new solutions that were thought impossible,” he added.

The company must still demonstrate that 5,000 units can be produced each consecutive week, paving the way for further increases as the Model 3 approaches full global availability.
