Tesla Model 3 AWD and Performance specs announced

Musk promises a BMW M3-beating “config.”

Late Saturday night Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk announced the specs of the Model 3 AWD and range-topping Model 3 Performance.

Musk took to Twitter to break the news, using his tech-speak to call the specifications a “config.” The AWD version will have a dual-motor setup, which is no surprise, but the Model 3 Performance earns its trim moniker with an even more potent dual-motor setup that has double the burn-in.

The result is significantly improved performance. The standard single-motor rear-wheel-drive Model 3 accelerates from 0-60 in 5.1 seconds, the dual-motor AWD clocks in at 4.5 seconds, while the Performance hits the mark in just 3.5 seconds.

While the top speed of the AWD version still matches that of the RWD version at 140 mph, the Performance will reach 155 mph. Both AWD and Performance have a range of 310 miles.

AWD will be a $5,000 option, while the Performance will top out at $78,000 with every option but Autopilot. Along with the extra speed owners will get 20-inch wheels, as well as options for black and white interior.

Ever the showman, Musk didn’t stop there. He threw down some fighting words at BMW as well, tweeting, “Cost is $78k. About same as BMW M3, but 15% quicker & with better handling. Will beat anything in its class on the track.”
