2019 Porsche Macan makes world debut in Shanghai

The fastest-selling Porsche receives interior and exterior updates.

The updated 2019 Porsche Macan was unveiled in Shanghai Wednesday, marking the first significant update to Porsche’s volume model since its debut in 2014.

Outside

The updated model heralds the introduction of standard LED headlights (previously an upgrade) in a front end which has been redesigned to make the Macan appear lower and wider. Out back, a new “three-dimensional” LED tail light strip and four-point design brake lights differentiate the new Macan from the outgoing model.

The car debuted in “Miami Blue,” which is one of several new colors for 2019 (The others are “Mamba Green Metallic,” “Dolomite Silver Metallic” and the nebulously described “Crayon.”

Inside

The center stack boasts the most significant updates to the Macan’s cabin. A new 11-inch touchscreen sits atop it, and consequently the vents were redesigned and moved below the infotainment. Speaking of HVAC, a new ionizer feature helps improve interior air quality.

A new steering wheel has been added as well, and it incorporates a drive mode switch and “Sport” button as part of the Sport Chrono package. A heated windscreen is now also available.

Tech

We mentioned the upgraded screen above, but there’s new stuff behind it too. Porsche Communication Management has been updated to the latest version, and Connect Plus (Porsche’s networking hardware, which enables features such as real-time traffic monitoring) is now standard. A new Offroad Precision app also allows drivers to track and share off-road experiences.

The greasy bits

Underneath all the gloss and polish, the Macan’s suspension has been tweaked for added stability and neutrality along with ride comfort. Staggered wheel and tire setups are still par for the course for the compact Posche CUV, though new 20- and 21-inch designs have been added for 2019.

Porsche has not committed to any powertrain figures quite yet, but we expect power bumps across its lineup of gasoline engines. As one might expect in the current climate, the company had nothing to say about any diesel variants.

What’s next

This debut means global production should be right around the corner, though we may not see the 2019 model on U.S. soil until late in 2018. Expect pricing updates, U.S. feature information and full performance specifications closer to launch.
