2020 Karma Revero getting BMW power

It’s receiving design tweaks, too.

Karma, a Chinese company born from the ashes of Fisker, will announce a series of upgrades to the Revero during the 2019 Shanghai auto show. The plug-in hybrid sedan will notably be quicker than before thanks in part to a new engine.

The company completely redesigned the plug-in hybrid powertrain found under the Revero’s sheet metal. It’s now built around a turbocharged, 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine borrowed from the BMW parts bin. The triple functions as a generator that channels the electricity it makes to a lithium-ion battery pack that’s more powerful than before. In turn, the pack zaps a twin-motor rear module into motion.

The upgrades will help the 2020 Karma Revero hit 60 mph a stop in 4.5 seconds, a figure that makes it a full second quicker than the outgoing 2019 model. There’s no word on electric range or fuel economy yet.

Karma released a dark teaser image of the 2020 Revero, which suggests the sedan will also feature an updated design. We don’t know what it looks like yet, but we can tell its overall shape and proportions haven’t changed much since it made its global debut as the Fisker Karma in 2011.

The Revero won’t be the only new car on the Karma stand in Shanghai. The company is planning to reveal a Pininfarina-designed electric concept car, and a battery-powered design study named Vision. The three cars will illustrate the firm’s short-, medium-, and long-term visions of the future.
