Alfa Romeo cans 4C; 4C Spider survives


Alfa’s two-seater just got a lot more expensive.

Alfa Romeo has confirmed the three-year old 4C will retire after the 2018 model year. The roof-less 4C Spider will carry on for a little bit longer.

There are other changes in store for the 2019 model year, according to Motor Authority. 4C buyers will no longer be able to select the optional Track Pack, though the features it adds (like a race-tuned suspension, Pirelli P-Zero AR Racing tires, and carbon fiber mirror caps) will be available individually. And, like every car sold new in the United States, the 4C will come standard with a rear-view camera.

The decision to go convertible-only will make the 4C much more expensive for the 2019 model year. The hardtop currently starts at $55,900 while the Spider commands $65,900. For 2019, the Spider will cost $66,900 before options and a mandatory $1,595 destination charge enter the equation.

Alfa Romeo previously revealed it will not replace the 4C; at least not directly. Instead, it will launch a coupe variant of the Giulia that will resurrect the storied GTV nameplate. The two-door will compete in the same segment as the BMW 4 Series and the Audi A5.

At the other end of the spectrum, Alfa will introduce a supercar named 8C that will land with a carbon fiber chassis and a 700-horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain built around a twin-turbocharged mid-mounted engine.
