Mercedes-Benz has started the lengthy process of replacing its lineup of entry-level models. We saw the all-new A-Class (pictured) break cover earlier this year, and we expect to discover the replacements for the CLA and the GLA in the coming months. All three models will spawn 45-badged, AMG-tuned models in the not-too-distant future. A recent report suggests they’ll be worth waiting for.
Power for all three will come from an evolution of the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found in today’s 45 models. It will be extensively re-engineered, according to Autocar, and it will deliver “well over” 400 horsepower. The magazine accurately points out the four-cylinder will boast over 200 horsepower per liter of displacement, a figure higher than the one posted by the McLaren Senna.
While earlier rumors claimed the 45 models would go hybrid, AMG boss Tobias Moers told Autocar that’s not the case. The brand is working on plug-in hybrid powertrains but it will first introduce the technology on its bigger models.
The AMG portfolio will grow yet again before we see the next-generation A45.
“We’ve identified a market for a milder AMG model positioned below the A45 4Matic. The strategy is going to be similar to that seen further up the line-up, where our various 43 models support the 63 models,” Moers confirmed.
The 43-badged models will use a de-tuned version of the 45’s turbo four rated at approximately 300 horsepower, a figure which will place the A43 right in Golf R territory. It’s safe to assume the CLA, the GLA, and most of the as-of-yet-still-secret compacts that will join the family in the coming years will benefit from the same treatment.
