Chinese EV startup NIO is in the process of building its own electric car, but in the meantime it is taking on the EV front-runners in a completely different way: They’ll bring the charger to you.
It may sound like something The Gang would come up with, but as reddit user JayinShanghai demonstrates, it’s far from just a harebrained scheme.
NIO’s charging vans carry two 70kWh battery packs–enough to charge two of the company’s forthcoming ES8 EVs–and, as you can clearly see here, are capable of charging more than just the company’s own vehicles.
The price is hefty compared to wall charging, but NIO offers a respectable level of convenience. 100 km of charge takes only ten minutes, the user says, and drivers need not be present with their vehicles during the process.
Theoretically, the convenience could extend from the typical charge-at-work situation to other convenient opportunities, such as lunch or coffee breaks at locations where charging is not offered on-site.
