Daimler becomes latest to spin off mobility operations

Daimler announced Thursday that will be the next automaker to spin off its mobility and autonomy operations into a separate company.

Details are still thin at this point, but Daimler AG will comprise three distinct and independent entities: Mercedes-Benz AG, Daimler Truck AG and Daimler Mobility AG, Reuters reports.

Ford announced a similar move earlier this week, though the Blue Oval was more detailed in how it sees its subsidiary interacting with the rest of its business (and, for that matter, how it will operate independently).

Automakers have taken different approaches to exploring the growing autonomy sector, from establishing independent corporate divisions (as in this case) to operating captive incubators tasked with attracting talent interested in developing new technologies and exploring new business opportunities tied to mobility.
