Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revived his arguments against the United Auto Workers, responding to lingering criticism based on media reports that surfaced earlier this year.
The executive has effectively accused the UAW of orchestrating a propaganda campaign to foment distrust among the workers in Fremont, California, where the company builds the Model S, X and 3. The latest headline-generating report claimed the company was violating safety standards because Musk disliked the color yellow and the sound of beeping forklifts, among other gripes.
“Nothing stopping Tesla team at our car plant from voting union. Could do so [tomorrow] if they wanted,” he said in a recent Twitter post. “But why pay union dues & give up stock options for nothing” Our safety record is 2X better than when the plant was UAW & everybody already gets healthcare.”
The comments refer to the factory’s previous history as a General Motors – Toyota joint production facility, known as NUMMI, that shuttered in 2010. Musk’s latest post does not acknowledge that Tesla’s Total Recordable Incident Rate, a standard metric for factory safety, had been below the current automotive-industry average.
Tesla has said the Model 3 was designed from the very beginning with input from ergonomic experts to avoid injuries. The company promises to eventually become the safest automotive factory in the world.
