Hamilton wins, Mercedes dominates in Italy

Lewis Hamilton captured the lead of the championship as Mercedes crushed Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix, with the Briton leading home team-mate Valtteri Bottas for a 1-2. Sebastian Vettel took a lonely third.

Hamilton only relinquished the lead during the pit stop phase as he triumphed for the sixth time this season, beating Bottas by 4.4 seconds.

Vettel, meanwhile, claimed a podium finish, albeit 36 seconds down on Hamilton, amid complaints of a problem during the final stint.

Hamilton now leads the standings by three points from Vettel.

Hamilton preserved his track position at the start as Esteban Ocon moved into second, ahead of Lance Stroll, while Bottas battled compatriot Kimi Raikkonen for fifth.

As Hamilton stretched his advantage, Bottas swiftly kept Raikkonen at bay before overhauling Stroll and Ocon in quick succession, moving into second place.

The Mercedes pair lapped line astern for the remainder of proceedings, with Hamilton only losing the lead through virtue of pitting one lap earlier than Bottas, as both ran a Super Soft / Soft strategy.

Vettel, having usurped Raikkonen, also quickly cleared the Williams and Force India youngsters, though faced a seven-second deficit to Bottas.

From there, Vettel gradually slipped further adrift, and ultimately came home half a minute behind Hamilton, commenting on the slow-down lap that “the last 15-20 laps, after I went off, something was wrong.”

TV cameras did not pick up the moment to which Vettel was alluding.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo took a fine fourth as he ran the alternative strategy, starting on Softs before making a late stop onto Super Softs.

Ricciardo, having survived early contact with Romain Grosjean, picked his way past rivals and emerged from the pits in fifth spot.

Ricciardo surged up onto the rear of Reikkonen and completed a move into the Rettifilo chicane from some way back, though was unable to close up to Vettel, finishing four seconds shy.

Raikkonen took fifth, with Ocon a fine sixth, having resisted initial pressure from Stroll.

Stroll, who slipped behind Raikkonen due to a slow pit stop, defended from Williams team-mate Felipe Massa on the final lap to preserve seventh, while Sergio P?rez claimed ninth.

Max Verstappen surged up the order during the opening stages, having started from 13th place, but picked up a puncture while battling with Massa through the Rettifilo chicane.

Verstappen, who dropped to last, switched to a two-stop strategy, and eventually worked his way into the top 10, taking the final point on offer.

The 14th round of the season will take place in Singapore from September 15-17
