Kia Niro earns Top Safety Pick Plus award

The vehicle earned ‘good’ ratings in all crashworthiness tests.

Kia’s Niro has earned a Top Safety Pick Plus award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The vehicle received ‘good’ ratings in all crashworthiness tests, including the new passenger-side small overlap evaluation. Its front-crash prevention system, standard on the plug-in version, received a ‘superior’ mark by avoiding collisions at 12 mph and 25 mph.

The base headlights on both versions of the Niro were deemed ‘poor,’ but the HID headlights on higher trim levels have received the top rating. LED headlights are also available on the plug-in model but have not yet been rated.

Other TSP+ winners in the small car category include the Subaru Impreza and WRX, Kia Forte and Soul, and the Hyundai Elantra.
