Mercedes-Benz commits to 10-year contract extension, expanding electric vehicle production base in Thailand, while delivering cellblocks to NSTDA for energy research


Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) Ltd. moves forward to instill confidence in consumers, continuing electric vehicle production plans in Thailand by signing a 10-year contract extension with Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant Ltd., as a long-term partner in car assembly and battery production. Along with supporting global circular economy initiatives, Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) Ltd. delivers lithium-ion battery cellblocks with a capacity of 2 MWh, sourced from ramp-up batteries to the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA)
for research purposes and energy resource creation. This initiative not only contributes to advancing Thai personnel skills in the energy segment, but also benefits the future of the Thai automotive industry.

The collaboration between Mercedes-Benz Thailand and Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant began in 1979, marking a longstanding history of luxury car manufacturing excellence in the country. Presently, over 13 models including A-Class, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, GLA, GLC, GLE, GLS, C-Coupe, GLC-Coupe, CLS, Maybach S-Class, and EQS, are produced in this facility. Not to mention, the celebration of assembling the 200,000th Mercedes-Benz vehicle in Thailand was achieved in January this year. This accomplishment is attributed to the fusion of technological excellence and innovation, alongside globally standardized manufacturing methods from Mercedes-Benz, and the expertise of the production facility in Thailand, which aligns with the brand’s essence.

This is evident in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), initiating the delivery of 2 MWh lithium-ion battery cellblocks before July 2024, supporting Thai research, development, and technology endeavors, while enhancing Thai personnel capabilities and testing locally produced electric vehicle batteries to meet global standards.

“This cooperation, led by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) through NSTDA, plays a significant role in promoting research and development of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) from electric vehicle batteries. Collaborating with Mercedes-Benz and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to establish a design and testing center for energy storage systems from electric vehicle batteries in Thailand, the first in ASEAN. NSTDA is committed to researching and developing innovations that address sustainable energy use, driving Thailand to become a leader in green technology. Furthermore, this cooperation demonstrates the potential of collaboration between the public and private sectors in the global automotive industry to promote an environmentally friendly research, development, and innovation ecosystem for modern electric vehicles.
