BMW has good and bad news for fans of the 2 Series. The model will continue to ride on a rear-wheel drive platform when it’s replaced, according to a recent report, but the convertible variant will get axed.
The next-generation 2 Series will switch to the CLAR platform that will also underpin the next 3 Series and the upcoming Z4. Using a modular architecture will help BMW keep costs in check, an important point when it comes to making a business case for a car positioned in a shrinking segment of the market. German website BimmerToday learned the next 2 will boast a near-50/50 weight distribution, which bodes well for its handling — and for the next M2.
The model will be coupe-only. The existing convertible variant will get phased out in the wake of slow sales. The report adds officials worry about the car overlapping with the aforementioned Z4, and the convertible segment isn’t big enough to warrant making two models positioned in roughly the same price bracket.
