Nissan has officially unveiled its longer-range Leaf Plus Series. In addition to more range, the newest Leaf variant also boasts a more powerful electric drivetrain.
The Nissan Leaf Plus arrives with an energy-dense 62 kWh battery pack, boosting the EV’s electric range to 226 miles. Nissan says that’s about a 40 percent increase compared to the normal Leaf.
Power is also up significantly in the Plus model, standing at 215 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque (the standard Leaf is rated at 147hp and 236 lb-ft of torque). Thanks to that extra juice the Leaf Plus is not only quicker to accelerate than the standard Leaf, but also 10 percent faster on the top end.
Nissan says the Leaf Plus will be a global product. In the United States and Canada the long-range model will be known as the Leaf Plus; in other world markets it will be branded as Leaf e+.
“The new Nissan LEAF e+ offers all of the style, convenience and electric vehicle benefits that have helped make LEAF the best-selling electric vehicle in the world, plus even more driving excitement, range, power and choice,” said Denis Le Vot, senior vice president and chairman, Nissan North America. “Customers now have a selection of powertrains and models to best suit their driving needs.”
