Peugeot could return to U.S. by 2022

Peugeot is coming back sooner than expected.

French automaker Peugeot has accelerated plans to reenter the United States market, a new report finds. Peugeot initially said it would launch in the U.S. by 2026, but the automaker’s cars might arrive a full four years early.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Peugeot parent PSA Group now believes the brand will be ready for a U.S. launch in 3-4 years. PSA boss Carlos Tavares says the company is ahead of schedule thanks to its recent acquisition of Opel from General Motors.

That statement would seem to indicate that a rebadged Opel might be the first Peugeot to land in America. That strategy would make sense since several Opel models are currently sold in the United States under the Buick banner. However, Tavares has previously stated that all Peugeot models are under consideration for the company’s U.S. relaunch, so it’s possible that the first Peugeot to arrive here will be one of its own designs.

How Peugeot plans to distribute cars in the U.S. also remains a mystery. The company hasn’t ruled out a traditional dealer network, but Peugeot is also considering “innovative” alternatives, including an online sales model.
