Porsche is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a new concept car based on the company’s legendary 911. Porsche’s first ever model, the 356, received it operating permit on this day in 1948.
In order to pay homage to the original 356 Roadster that started it all 70 years ago, Porsche created an open-air concept known as the 911 Speedster. The body of the concept started out life as a Carrera 4 Cabriolet, but Porsche redesigned the car with a shorter windshield frame, greater windscreen angle, shorter side windows and a unique decklid made out of carbon fiber. Like the 1988 911 Speedster, the concept also features “streamliners” covering its supplemental safety bars, and a tonneau cover takes the place of the traditional convertible top.
The exterior of the 911 Speedster Concept is finished in a silver and white paint scheme as a nod to Porsche’s early racing cars. Other unique features of the 911 Speedster include a fuel cap located in the front trunk lid, throw-back style side mirrors, Speedster badging and headlight covers with the shape of an “X” in them intended to mimic the tape used to protect the headlights of early race cars. The car also wears 21-inch Fuchs-design wheels complete with center locks.
The interior of the 911 Speedsters isn’t typical Porsche luxury. That’s because Porsche removed the car’s navigation, radio and air condition in the name of lightness. Seats are made from carbon fiber and covered in Cognac leather.
Although the body of the concept is from a Carrera 4 Cabriolet, all of the chassis components were swiped from the high-performance 911 GT3. The 911 Speedster Concept is powered by a naturally aspirated flat-six engine that makes 500 horsepower and can scream to 9,000rpm. In proper Porsche fashion, the 911 Speedster Concept uses a six-speed manual transmission.
So far the 911 Speedster is strictly a concept, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Porsche put the show car into production as a send off to the current 991-generation of the 911.
