The president says he could implement new taxes if the EU doesn’t negotiated new trade deals in “good faith.”
President Donald Trump threatened again on Thursday to impose new tariffs on European-made vehicles if the European Union failed to revise its trade rules with regard to the United States.
For the last few weeks president Trump has been weighing new taxes on foreign-made automobiles, citing a need to protect national security. But on Thursday the president stated such tariffs could be imposed based on trade deals alone.
President Trump is scheduled to host European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Washington later this month, at which time the two sides will discuss trade laws. If Juncker doesn’t present trade rules that are “fair” for the United States, Trump could enact the tariffs.
“And if they don’t negotiate in good faith we’ll do something having to do with all the millions of cars that are coming into our country and being taxed at a virtually zero level, at a very low level… I think it’s been a very effective way of negotiating, but I’m not negotiating, I just want fairness for the United States,” Trump said, according to Automotive News.
Talks between the U.S. and the EU are scheduled to kick off on July 25.
