Tesla recently removed details of its ride-sharing network from vehicle order pages, but the company is apparently still planning to launch the service.
Responding to questions on Twitter, CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the cabin-facing camera found in Tesla’s latest vehicles will be used for the ride-sharing function. Earlier speculation suggested Tesla may have been planning to roll out a new system to gauge driver engagement, beyond the current system that senses when hands are taken off the wheel.
“It’s there for when we start competing with Uber/Lyft & people allow their car to earn money for them as part of the Tesla shared autonomy fleet,” Musk explained. “In case someone messes up your car, you can check the video.”
The executive reaffirmed that Tesla cars being made today are already built with the technology to support the service.
“Just a matter of finishing the software & going through regulatory approval,” he added.
