Tesla teases Model Y, promises March unveiling

It’s only the second image of the Model Y Tesla has ever revealed.

Tesla kicked off its annual shareholder’s meeting on Tuesday, with the company covering a myriad of topics ranging from vehicle production to Supercharger stations. The most intriguing point, however, was the release of a new Model Y teaser image.

The image doesn’t give away too much, but it’s only our second glimpse of the Model Y electric utility vehicle. Tesla has only released one other image of the Model Y to date, and that was almost exactly one year ago.

Like the previous teaser image, the latest depiction of the Model Y is darkened and only shows a portion of the vehicle. But from the new angle we can see that the Model Y will have a vertical front end treatment similar to that of the Model X. It also appears as though the Model Y, which will be roughly the size of the Model 3 sedan, will have a few more curves than the larger Model X, including a more sharply raked windshield.

According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the Model Y won’t use any leather in its interior. The executive also joked that the Model Y might not even have a steering wheel. Although clearly in jest, Musk’s statement seems to imply that the Model Y will have a much more advanced version of the company’s Autopilot system.

“Model Y will not have any leather in it, even in the steering wheel….even if it does have a steering wheel,” Musk said, according to Electrek.

Musk assured shareholders that the Model Y would be unveiled in March 2019. Tesla previously stated a late 2019 production goal for the Model Y, but it remains unclear at this point if the company will be able to hit that target.
