Waymo has announced several new and expanded partnerships with retailers, hotels, a car dealer and car rental agency as the company prepares to roll out service to the general public in the Metro Phoenix area.

A pilot program with Walmart will give riders discounts on groceries ordered on Walmart.com. Waymo’s vehicles will be deployed to transport the rider to and from Walmart to collect their groceries.

A separate partnership with shopping center manager DDR will take riders to and from the Ahwatukee Foothills Towne Center in Chandler, while the nearby Element Hotel will give select guests access to Waymo vehicles for commuting to work.

Waymo has expanded its partnership with automotive retailer AutoNation, the contractor currently responsible for maintaining the Waymo fleet. AutoNation will now offer Waymo rides instead of loaner vehicles when a customer brings a vehicle in for service.

Avis Budget Group, which refuels and prepares Waymo vehicles for riders, will soon use the autonomous taxis to help customers pick up or drop off rental cars.

“While these are Metro Phoenix-specific partnerships today, these businesses are national and what we learn from these programs will give us a network of partners when we launch in new cities down the road,” Waymo says.
