X2 misses Top Safety Pick; BMW to revise head restraints

BMW’s 2018 X2 has fallen short of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick awards.

The small crossover aced all of the IIHS crash tests, with an ‘advanced’ rating for front-crash prevention and ‘acceptable’ headlights. Its head restraints received an ‘acceptable’ rating, however, disqualifying the model from the TSP list.

“The lack of a good head restraint rating is unusual,” the IIHS noted. “The X2 is one of only four 2018 vehicles with an acceptable rating; the other 181 tested models earn a good rating.”

The head-restraint test evaluates how well the seat and headrests protect the driver from whiplash. The X2 seat received a ‘fail’ designation with excessive g-force on the torso and slightly too much delay for head contact.

BMW has notified IIHS of ‘planned improvements’ and a new test will be conducted in September.
