Toyota has unveiled its all-new 2019 RAV4 compact crossover at the 2018 New York International Auto Show. The new RAV4 features tougher looks and a significant upgrade on the tech front.
The 2019 RAV4 is much more aggressively styled than the current SUV, with pronounced cut lines and sharp creases. A new Adventure trim grade ups the ante even further with fender flares, a unique grille and fog light surrounds.
The 2019 RAV4 rides on Toyota’s TNGA platform. The RAV4’s wheelbase has grown by more than an inch, but overall length is down slightly. The new RAV4 is also wider and lower than its predecessor.
The bulk of RAV4 models will be powered by a 2.5L four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Hybrid models will also use a 2.5L engine but will shift power via a continually variable transmission.
Three different all-wheel drive systems will be on offer — a standard system for gas-powered models, an AWD-i system for Hybrids and a new Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive with Rear Driveline Disconnect system available on Limited and Adventure trims. The latter features the ability to send up to 50 percent of the engine’s power to the SUV’s rear wheels, and it can also divvy up power between the left- and right-side tires to improve cornering. All gas AWD models also feature Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select system.
On the tech front, Toyota has included its latest Entune 3.0 infotainment system on all models. That tech suite includes a 7-inch touchscreen, WiFi connectivity, Amazon Alexa access and Android Auto and Apple CaPlay compatibility.
The new RAV4 also comes standard with Toyota’s TSS 2.0, which has advanced features like pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, radar cruise control, lane departure warning with steer assist, automatic high beams, lane tracing assist and road sign assist.
Toyota has not announced pricing information for the 2019 RAV4, but the company says gas versions of the crossover will be on sale by the end of the year. Hybrid models will arrive in showrooms in 2019.
