Tesla Model X tows Boeing 787 Dreamliner

The Model X P100D apparently serves as a unique replacement for an airport pushback tug.

Australian airline Qantas has released an interesting promotional  showing one of its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft being towed by a Tesla Model X.

With dual motors and plenty of torque, the P100D variant appears to effortlessly sit in for a traditional airport pushback tractor as it hauls the gigantic aircraft. A fully-laden 787-9 has a takeoff weight of 545,000 pounds, more than 100 times heavier than the P100D’s rated towing capacity.

Qantas’ PR video is not the first time a standard production car has been used to move a large aircraft. The aircraft may be heavy but surprisingly easy to get rolling with fully inflated tires on the perfect surface of an airport taxiway.

The Porsche Cayenne S Diesel — with less torque than the Model X P100D — has successfully pulled an Airbus A380, a double-deck widebody airliner with a takeoff weight of more than 1.2 million pounds.
